Age determination of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua): 2012 Workshop between Canada and France on cod otoliths. Final report of the project SALMOCODAGE ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Schwab, Philippe; Hiscock, Charlie; Cossitt, Gus; Briand, Daniel; Goraguer, Herle.
France and Canada have been working closely together for numerous years under the governance of The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) that regulates fisheries in the Northwest Atlantic. This workshop was the first step to achieve greater agreement in the estimation of age from calcified pieces between the scientific experts from those 2 countries. The goal of this project is to realize a calibration of the estimation of ages from cod (Gadus morhua) between France and Canada in order to optimize the precision of the data supplied by those countries for stock assessment purposes. There has been in the past an internal workshop for Atlantic Canada in 1997 on ageing fish and numerous workshops for Northeast Atlantic, more precisely for the...

In 2013, the project ‘Assessment of the renewable rate of the seawater masses in the Miquelon ‘Grand Etang’ ‘ focused essentially on (1) building a data set originating from all partners (e.g., DTAM, IGN), (2) preliminary sampling of current patterns so as to facilitate the 2014 field sampling strategy. Besides this approach, a census of aerial pictures dated from 1950, 1990 and 2005 were studied to assess the temporal trends of this geographic sector. The field work to be carried out in 2014 are: 1) Bathymetry: data acquisition in the ‘Grand Etang’ in the area presently used for mussel long lines culture to obtain a comprehensive data set, transversal profiles at the strait level at the near vicinity of the current pattern measuring station. 2) Current...

Length structures and maturity ogive for Atlantic Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) from St-Pierre et Miquelon fishery in NAFO subdivision 3Ps in 2014. ArchiMer
Vigneau, Joel; Claireaux, Daniel; Goascoz, Nicolas; Goraguer, Herle; Mahe, Kelig.
The Atlantic halibut stock area comprises the NAFO subdivisions 3NOPs4VWX5Zc where total international catches has increased to about 2300 tonnes in 2013 and the TAC for 2014 has been set to 2563 tonnes. The St-Pierre et Miquelon uptake of the overall quota varies between 2 to 6 % over the last 10 years. In 2014, responding to a demand for improving the scientific cooperation, by the Canada France Consultative Committee (CFCC) for 3Ps management, SPM began the monitoring of the autumn fishery by on-board observer. The objectives were to provide the stock assessment working group with information on maturity given that the fishery is fishing on a spawning ground.

Movements of three alcid species breeding sympatrically in Saint Pierre and Miquelon, northwestern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Delord, Karine; Barbraud, Christophe; Pinaud, David; Letournel, Bruno; Jaugeon, Baptiste; Goraguer, Herle; Lazure, Pascal; Lormée, Hervé.
Among seabirds, alcids are particularly sensitive to bycatch in fisheries and oil pollution, yet their distribution at sea remains scarcely known in most of their breeding areas. GPS telemetry data of fifteen individuals of alcids (5 Razorbills 6 Common Murres and 4 Puffins) were analyzed to determine their distribution during the breeding period of 2016 at Saint Pierre and Miquelon Archipelago (SPM). Two analytical methods (threshold and a switching state-space model) were used to identify behavioral modes and foraging areas. We compared foraging movements and estimated the overlap between the species. Distribution and foraging covered an area located between SPM and Newfoundland. Our results revealed that the three species headed northward of their...

Mahe, Kelig; Deschamps, Denise; Elleboode, Romain; Goraguer, Herle.
France and Canada work together to follow the salmon populations (Salmo salar) of the North-western Atlantic, integrating the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon (subdivision 3Ps). Ageing data are thus provided by these countries. The age estimation of salmon is carried out starting from the scales. These present two distinct areas because this migrating fish lives at first in rivers and the second part at sea with some passages in rivers (homing phenomenon). As a result of which, the interpretation of ages from these scales is difficult. The purpose of this meeting which was held in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon from the 10 to September 14, 2012 with French and Canadian scientists, was to measure and optimize the precision of the age data provided...

Sellier, Marion; Poitevin, Pierre; Goraguer, Herle; Faure, Jean-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Initiated in 2013, the present work carried out in 2014 extends the monitoring network focusing on marine invasive exotic species in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago. In a global context of coastal ecosystems’ changes, accentuated by direct or indirect effects of human activities, it became essential to implement a monitoring survey and to track the expansion of marine invasive species along Saint-Pierre and Miquelon shoreline. Fukui traps and tunicates collectors deployed on different stations as well as the timely completion of observational dives, have provided the following conclusions: several invasive species were again reported within the local marine ecosystem. Those species, i.e., Carcinus maenas, Caprella mutica, Ciona intestinalis,...

Toxicité des sédiments. Test sur les embryons de bivalves ArchiMer
Goraguer, Herle; Toularastel, France.
Mytilus early development biossays have been used for sediment toxicity testing in the coastal zone heavily contaminated by the river Seine. This bioassays have been realized from fecundation to "D" larval stage in presence of sediment aqueous extracts. Results exhibit a high variability wich could not be related to any geographical gradient, probably due to a large effect on variance of seasonal variations.
